How We Ship Vehicles: Container and RORO
USKO Shipping offers two primary methods for international vehicle export. The right choice depends on your vehicle type, destination port, budget, and timeline. Here's how each method works.
Container Shipping
Your vehicle is loaded into a steel shipping container – either exclusively (20ft, 40ft, or 45ft.) or consolidated with other cargo to reduce cost. Container shipping provides additional protection and flexibility for non-running or high-value vehicles.
Best for:
Non-running vehicles, salvage units, motorcycles, classic or high-value cars, and situations where the destination port does not support RORO.
Keep in mind:
Slightly higher cost than RORO for standard vehicles. Loading and securing inside the container requires care – USKO handles all stuffing and blocking at our West Sacramento warehouse.
RORO – Roll-On Roll-Off
Your vehicle is driven directly onto a specialized vessel via a ramp and secured in the car decks for the voyage. No crating or container required. RORO is the most cost-effective method for running vehicles and is widely available on major shipping lanes.
Best for:
Running passenger cars, trucks, SUVs, motorcycles, and commercial vehicles. Lower per-unit cost. Available at all five USKO port terminals.
Keep in mind:
Vehicle must be in running condition. Less enclosed than container – suitable for most standard vehicles but not for high-value collectibles.

Contact USKO with your vehicle details (year, make, model, condition, origin zip code) and destination country or port. We provide a freight quote and confirm vessel availability. Once confirmed, we issue a booking and send you the required documentation checklist.
2. Vehicle Drop-Off or Domestic Pickup
Deliver your vehicle to our West Sacramento warehouse, or use our domestic auto transport coordination to arrange pickup anywhere in the continental U.S. and Hawaii, and Canada. We inspect and photograph the vehicle on arrival.
3. Title, Documentation & Customs Filing
We verify the title, prepare export documentation (bill of lading, export customs declaration, EEI/AES filing), and ensure all paperwork meets both U.S. export regulations and destination country import requirements.
4. Port Processing & Container Loading
Your vehicle is transported to the designated terminal (Oakland, New York, Savannah, Chicago, or Houston), processed through U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and loaded via RORO ramp or stuffed into a container with proper blocking and bracing.
5. Vessel Departure & Tracking
We provide the bill of lading and sailing details once the vessel departs. USKO keeps you informed of vessel schedules and can assist with destination customs guidance and delivery coordination.

What documents do I need to ship my vehicle internationally?
You will need the original vehicle title (clear, in your name), a copy of your passport or government-issued ID, and a bill of sale if applicable. USKO handles preparation of the export customs declaration (EEI/AES filing) and bill of lading on your behalf. Some destination countries require additional import permits – we will advise you based on your destination.
How long does it take to ship a vehicle overseas?
Transit times vary by destination. West Coast U.S. to Asia or Australia: approximately 20–35 days. To Europe or the Middle East via East Coast terminals: approximately 15–25 days. To West Africa: approximately 18–30 days. These are vessel transit times; allow 5–10 additional business days for port processing and customs clearance at origin.
What is the difference in cost between RORO and container shipping?
RORO is generally 20–40% less expensive than container shipping for a single standard vehicle on routes where RORO is available. Container shipping costs more per unit but allows multiple vehicles or mixed cargo in one container, which can reduce per-unit cost for fleet shipments. Container is also required for non-running vehicles and motorcycles.
Is my vehicle insured during shipping?
Marine cargo insurance is available and strongly recommended. Standard freight liability under the bill of lading is limited. USKO can arrange marine insurance coverage for your vehicle – ask about this when you request your quote and we will include the premium in your cost estimate.
Can you ship a vehicle that doesn't run?
Yes. Non-running vehicles require container shipping (not RORO) and must be loaded with a forklift or rolling apparatus. There may be a small surcharge for non-running vehicle handling. Salvage and flood vehicles are accepted – see our Salvage Vehicle Export section for full details.
Which U.S. ports do you operate from?

What happens at the destination port - do you handle delivery?
USKO's responsibility covers the origin port through vessel departure. We provide all shipping documents needed for destination customs clearance. We can recommend destination agents in many countries and will coordinate with them on your behalf upon request. Final delivery from the destination port is typically arranged locally.
